In November 1961, the Battalion returned to Germany
to become part of the 4th Guards Brigade, occupying
the same barracks in Hubbelrath that they had left eight
years earlier. After an enjoyable two years they returned
Chelsea Barracks, London and two years later on to Elizabeth
Barracks, Pirbright. In October 1966 the Battalion emplaned
for Aden as part of 24th Infantry Brigade taking over
Internal Security from the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards.
Within a few days of arriving in Aden, they embarked
on HMS Fearless to carry out a cordon and search operation
in the East Aden Protecorate. This turned out to be
a sucessful operation, resulting in the capture of a
number of known dissidents, arms, ammunition and documents.
Duties in Aden comprised partly of up-country tours
of North West Frontier style picqueting and keeping
roads open at Habilayn and Dhala, as well as Battalion
sized forays into the Djebel areas. In Little Aden the
down-country tours consisted of active urban patrolling
and checkpoints. The Battalion helped to load ships
for the evacuation of stores. In addition Nos 1 and
3 Companies were hurriedly despatched in June 1967 to
Mukalla in the East Aden Protectorate, when operations
in the Hahdramout at Seyiun to rescue British Nationals
took place.
The Battalion returned to Elizabeth Barracks, Pirbright
in August 1967. From there it carried out Public Duties
until it moved to Victoria Barracks, Windsor in September
1968. The time at Windsor was greatly saddened by the
death in June 1969 on the Fifth Colonel of the Regiment,
Field Marshal The Earl Alexander of Tunis KG. His body
lay in state in Victoria barracks and it was from there
that his funeral procession left for St George's Chapel
with a Bearer party and Escort from the Battalion. The
Battalion also provided the Guards of Honour outside
the Chapel.
In November 1970 the Battalion moved to Hong Kong.
Whilst there some it's duties were to patrol the Sin-Hong
Kong border to prevent infiltration by the Chinese into
Hong Kong. In December 1972 the Battalion returned to
Caterham and in 1973 approximately 430 members of the
Battalion carried out a six-month tour of duty to Belize,
Central America. In June 1974 the Battalion found itself
once again finding the Escort and Number Two Guard for
the Queen's Birthday Parade followed in August of the
same year converting for it's new role in Germany, moving
to Münster in the December to join the 4th Guards
Armoured Brigade as a mechanised Battalion for a three
year tour.
The Battalion moved back to Victoria Barracks in November
1977 and almost immediately found itself taking part
in Operation Burberry fighting fires in London during
the Firemen's strike, using the Green Goddess fire engines.
In February 1979, the Battalion embarked on a six month
tour of Belize.
