The Sniper Platoon

IG Snipers in action in Iraq
The Colours of the Household Division.

The Sniper Platoon is manned by highly-motivated and fit members of the Battalion. They have a high level of marksmanship and fieldcraft and must  be able to work in small groups ahead of the Main Battle Group. Like the other Platoons in Support Company, they are a Battle Group asset so they are directly tasked by the Battle Group Commander. Their job is to harrass the enemy's advance by taking long-range shots at key targets such as enemy commanders and the periscopes of the advancing armour. The Sniper is trained to make accurate single round head shots out to a range of 600m and achieve harrassing fire out to a range of 1000m.

The British Army's sniper rifle

The British Army's sniper rifle was developed from the start as a military sniping rifle by Accuracy International. The rifle is accurate enough to achieve a first round hit at 600m and achieve harassing fire out to 1000m. Although fitted with fully adjustable iron sights for use out to 700m, the rifle is usually fitted with a Schmidt and Bender 6 x 42 telescopic sight. The front bi-pod is fully adjustable and folds forward when not in use.
