The MILAN Platoon is a very highly intelligent and professional
department within Support Company. It requires the younger
and less-experienced men to be capable of deployment under
stressful conditions in the minimum time allowed, in order
that the task at hand is completed successfully and with
minimum wastage of effort.
The Commanders of this elite Armoured Infantry Platoon must
possess the character and versatility that the MILAN demands.
Tactical siting and co-ordination skills from all of the
Command Structure is imperative for the weapon system to be
used to its best advantage and for it to survive. A great
deal of knowledge is required (gained through training) to be
efficient with the enemy's tactics within the battle-field.
The Duties of the MILAN Officer Commanding and Second-in-Command
require such a high standard of competence that it's scary.
The Officer and Warrant Officer must give advice on the
employment and deployment of all anti-Armour weapons available
to the Battle Group, producing a plan for the anti-Armour
defence and at the same time co-ordinating it. There is also
a contingency plan that will have to be made up along with
advice on fire control and priority of engagement of
enemy Armoured fighting vehicles. In addition to all this
the Command Structure have to monitor their own radios.
This will require 3 nets to be monitored by one individual,
at times, within the Warrior Armoured fighting vehicle.
The Duties of the MILAN section commanders (who are Sergeants)
and the Detachment Commanders ( Lance Sergeants) are not any
easier. Even though the rank is lower, the standard of
professionalism remains just the same. Some of the duties consist
of giving advice to the Rifle Company Commanders on Soviet
tactics and AFV, giving advice on the precise siting of each MILAN
position and the Killing Area it covers. At times the Non-Commissioned
Officers will also have to give guidance on the deployment of
Company Anti-Armour assets such as all of the Company's 94mm
Light Anti-Tank weapons, along with advice on deception measures
to conceal MILAN, co-ordinate moves to alternative positions.
They may be required to command the MILAN section and overall
engagements by land line, radio or physical presence. |
